wedding bell blues

19 August 2025

“Wedding Bell Blues” by Laura Nyro has been stuck in my head for days. i first discovered it a few years ago after seeing this amazing vintage ad promoting the song on tumblr.

well, i guess i am not immune to marketing, because it has since gone triple platinum in my house.

A yellowed scan of a black-and-white poster depicting Laura Nyro, a young, dark-haired woman in a bridal veil and dress holding a bouquet of flowers. Text on the left reads: ‘I Don’t’: Not every girl gets her man to say ‘I do…’ but every once in a while you hear a young girl who sings and writes songs with a groovey conviction. Such an artist is Laura Nyro. You'll believe in her as ‘We do.’
the promotional poster for “Wedding Bell Blues” from a September 1966 issue of Billboard. so cool!

as the days begin to draw in, i am clinging to the consolation that i will soon be able to dress in layers again. i always complain about the heat during summer but it’s the cold i really can’t stand.

(if our landlord weasels his way out of replacing our rotting window frames again this year, i foresee a very miserable 6 months ahead indeed).

anyway, tom and i recently watched this spellbinding Jacques Rivette film called Gang of Four and i have never in my life seen so many covetable autumn wardrobes in one ensemble cast.

a still from the film Gang of Four depicting the four main characters dressed in flannels and jumpers sitting around a kitchen table cluttered with beverage bottles and half-eaten plates of food.
not a synthetic fibre in sight, i’m sure.

it has been:
26 days since we landed in canada,
18 days since we attended my friend’s lovely wedding,
14 days since my parents saw us off at the airport,
13 days since we arrived back home in england,
and 12 days since i returned to work.

i had a wonderful time off (and it was so special being a bridesmaid for one of my best friends!) but my jet lag has now morphed into the post-holiday [post-wedding bell] blues. i want to write more but i feel like i have nothing to say besides “i miss everyone terribly!” so this is all for now.
